In the original manuscript of Hoenix that was first submitted to Baen Books in 2004, there was one extra chapter sandwiched between Chapter 15 and the Epilogue. The Submission Editor of Baen liked the story, but felt that Chapter 16 left the story hanging, and so recommended that it be dropped.
Agreeing with her assessment, I took some of the elements from Chapter 16 and merged them into Chapter 15, and then dropped the rest of Chapter 16. It was my original intent for the story to lead into a second adventure and that dropped chapter would have been the bridge between the two. It would have also given it a direct tie-in to my Blue Horizon series. However, for the purpose of submitting a manuscript for publication, a first book by a new author should be self-contained.
The second story was never written, however. Should I ever have the opportunity to get back to that project, material from the dropped chapter from the first book may serve as the first chapter of the manuscript.
Presented here for the curious is that extra chapter.
